The "Why?" Question

12/6/2025

So many times I've encountered clients who have faced trauma or grief ask the question "Why?"   "What did this happen?"  "Why did that person do that?"  In traditional approaches therapists may try to psychoanalyze that with clients or simply find it futile to explore that question because the client may never know why. The person may not be alive to give an answer or no contact is feasible. Some approaches may redirect the client to think of other perspectives to try to help. In brain/body approaches, I found in most cases I help client process this aspect of the grief or trauma by simply acknowledging the question. Allowing it space to be felt. Then with the accelerated resourcing exercises I've created, shift their attention to those exercises to stretch the brain and allow for healing to be experienced indirectly without answering that "Why?" question. Surprisingly most times that question becomes irrelevant as the trauma become less and less triggering for clients, and leads to letting go - a level of resolution.

Certification or no?

I personally don't go for certifications because it feels like a pyramid scheme, an additional cost, bi-yearly or yearly re-certification fee, and so many hoops to jump through. Some modalities really are complex that they may need it, but some aren't. I respect and understand the value of staying close to the original model as training intended, but if I follow the training I paid and took carefully, and practice the model I'm getting the results. Yes, consultations are helpful as many do have questions on certain aspects of using a new model. So many may need it, but I didn't need certifications to feel skilled at a model. Also, those in private practice may find it helpful to promote themselves as they're certified in a modality. Because I worked either in a community mental health setting or managed care agency, there was no need to promote myself as we were flooded with clients that need help.

Codependent on Therapist?

An empowerment concept for the therapist/client seen in this clip from a dramatized TV series: New Amsterdam with Dr. Frome. He realizes that clients have become dependent on him. They could only open up to him, clients weren't empowered to live life without him or address things apart from in his sessions. That's unhealthy! We want to empower clients to live life on their own outside of therapy. Let's avoid having clients developing a codependent relationship in therapy and empower them to live life without life long therapy!

Overwhelmed as Therapist?

Therapists often in the field are overwhelmed by the work. The hard stories wear on them. The trauma may lead to vicarious trauma. I feel for such therapists and believe I can offer a solution.  I've been a specialist in trauma work for years. In my department I take on trauma clients. One could say I take on the hard clients that others don't want or know how to treat. This is NOT to brag on myself of how good of a therapist I am, but to share about a modality and technique I've developed over the years to treat clients with. One modality I use is feedback informed care, which is basically collecting data and survey from clients each session to monitor how client's are doing in treatment over time. Feedback informed care's research shows that client who do improve with the therapist typically make improvements within 8 sessions. After that, if therapy isn't working, a change of therapist or modality in therapy may be needed. Of course, there are more severe mental illness that need much more than 8 sessions. But, I'm speaking about general cases. As client's improve in treatment, I immediately discuss about the concept of graduating therapy and empowering them to live life without on going therapy.  I also use an original technique/modality I've created from the variety of trainings I've taken. It's called Accelerated Resourcing (AR). It helps clients get to the root of trauma related issues and helps them quickly heal and positively resource. It doesn't require me to hear the details of trauma, which easily could lead to vicarious trauma. So many therapist are so drained, anxious, down, and overwhelmed from dealing with such clients over the years. It doesn't have to do be that way! I've tracked every client I've worked with. The past year, the majority of my clients show improvement in their Lucet scores, successfully end treatment, and their sx are resolved. Of course I don't want to over promise and say that this works for everyone, but less than 10% of my clients report that this doesn't work for them. I'm confident this modality is helpful to clients and therapists alike! The training I've created helps therapist feel more confident in their ability to treat trauma related issues. And typically it doesn't leave a therapist feeling drained, tired, and straining for insightful ways to help. It facilitates the client's brain to do the hard work, usually allowing it to come up with new perspectives and ultimately empowers clients. And let's be real, most disorders are linked to some "trauma" anyways. A tough experience, or triggering experience that's stuck in the brain or in the person's awareness. If we allow the client's brain to heal from past "traumas" I typically find that a positive side effect from this treatment is that they're able to manage their current stressors in life much better! I typically tell my clients that after 2 sessions of therapy, it is crystal clear if this is working for them or not.
